Progress Monitor Now Has 550 Hours of Video Tutorials on .NET

Wednesday, May 27, 2009

Over Memorial Day weekend, I applied my programming skills to help me automate the steps involved adding new links to the video database for Progress Monitor.

In order to do this, I created a desktop application that navigates to any specified web page and copies the video title, video url, and so on and adds it to the database. This has reduced the amount of time it takes to add a new video from about 5 minutes to close to 30 seconds.

The result of this effort has been that the number of hours of video in the Progress Monitor database has grown from 450 to 550 in about 10 days time. Progress Monitor is now approaching 1200 videos!

Keep checking back in as the database is always growing.

The source code for the general logic of this type webpage scraping desktop application can be found at WebPageManipulation - just download the source code in the WebPageManipulation.zip. The application is extremely powerful, but the process of tweaking it to get what you want is "non-trivial" (as instructor Joe Hummel would say!).

Take care,
Wade Harvey
